Queens Sport Academies

In addition to our Elite Athlete Programme, Queen’s Sport offers Athletic Scholarships through our Bursary and Sports Academy Programmes.

Our Sports Bursary programme is open to athletes from all competitive backgrounds while we operate five dedicated programmes for athletes competing in Hockey, Gaelic Games, Rowing, Rugby, and Soccer. Specific information on each of our Academies is available by clicking on the links below. You can also support the work of Queen’s Sport by donating through our Alumni Relations Office. We are currently in year two of a five-year plan strategic plan for Sport Development at Queen’s, summarised in the document ‘Our Gameplan’ here. All of our activities at Queen’s Sport are conceived along our Pathways model, which helps our athletes, teams, coaches, and clubs set attainable developmental goals and targets.

GAA Academy

The GAA Academy oversees the development of Gaelic footballers, hurlers, camogs and handballs at Queen’s.

Supported by a foundation in honour of Seán O’Neill, one of Ulster’s greatest Gaelic footballers, the Academy currently supports more than twenty of our most promising athletes, all of whom are competing at intercounty and club level in addition to representing Queen’s. Our Academy players are already representing their counties at both senior and U-20 level and striving towards the very top level of the game. Current scholars include 2020 All-Ireland Minor winning captain Matthew Downey and current Limerick captain Gordon Brown.

Soccer Academy

Queen's growing Soccer Academy is the ideal place for players on the cusp of a professional career, but who want to gain world-class academic qualifications while continuing their sporting development. With the men's side currently competing in the NIFL Premier Intermediate League, the U21 side continuing to go from strength to strength and the ladies team getting stronger every year with record breaking numbers, it is the perfect time to join the Queen's Soccer Academy.

Hockey Academy

Queen’s Hockey academy was established in 2014 to further support our talented athletes and students. With an emphasis on mentoring and supporting our students both on and off the pitch, we help our students to set their goals and reach them.

We know the pressures of balancing performance sport and further education so we help guide our young people through the process to create first class students and athletes.

Rugby Academy

The Rugby Academy oversees the development of rugby at Queen’s University.T.

Supported by a foundation named in honour of of Ireland’s greatest rugby players, Jack Kyle, the scheme currently supports nearly twenty aspiring rugby players.The Jack Kyle Rugby Academy currently supports the most talented rugby players from within QUBRFC.The Academy accommodates players on course for provincial and international careers in rugby while keeping a strong focus on their academic achievement. Current scholars include 2023 Ireland U20 internationals Rory Telfer , Charlie Irvine and Joe Hopes along with current Ulster Senior Women Rachael McIlroy and Meabh Clenaghan.

Rowing Academy

The Queen’s Rowing Academy has gone from strength to strength in recent seasons with multiple successes to its name.

Queen’s University Belfast has a long and illustrious history of rowing. We pride ourselves on an exceptional breadth of coaching talent alongside first-class facilities, providing a fantastic platform for our athletes to excel at events home and abroad. Our Academy athletes compete at World and Olympic level as well as representing Queen’s in British and Irish University Championships. Recent alumni Rebecca Edwards (GB) and Phil Doyle (Ireland) competed at the Tokyo Olympics.
