Iain Henderson first came to prominence by helping Belfast Royal Academy reach the Schools Cup final in 2010. After leaving school the second row enrolled at QUEEN’S to study Mathematics and played his rugby for QUB RFC.
Henderson represented Ulster at U19 and U20 level before making his debut for the senior team in April 2012 when he came of the bench against Connacht at the Sportsground in Galway.
Iain’s rise was meteoric and seven months after his first Ulster appearance he made his debut for Ireland coming of the bench against South Africa in Dublin. He made three appearance in the 2013 Six Nations Championship.
In his second season with Ulster, Henderson made 19 appearances including coming of the bench in the Pro12 final defeat at the RDS against Leinster.
In 2014 Henderson played in for of Ireland’s five games as Joe Schmidt’s side were crowned Six Nations Championships. The following season Henderson played in all five games as Ireland retained the Championship. Henderson got his first international try against Wales in a world cup warm up game. Henderson was selected for the tournament and scored a try against Canada, he started in the second row in the quarter final defeat against Argentina.
In 2017 Henderson became the 22nd QUEEN’S student to represent British and Irish Lions when he was selected by Warren Gatland for the tour of New Zealand.
Henderson made six appearances in the red shirt. Henderson helped Ireland to win the Grand Slam in 2018 starting at lock in the decider on St Patrick’s Day against England at Twickenham.
Henderson went to his second world cup in 2019 but again Ireland were eliminated in the quarter final this time by New Zealand.After returning from the Japan Henderson was made captain of Ulster.
